Department AI Policy

  • AI can only be used for subtasks (e.g. generating images, graphs, tables, bibliography entries). Lecturers determine what specific tasks AI can be used for in their own courses.
  • Students are not allowed to use AI to generate their research topics, theses, assignments, homework tasks, essays, presentations or any part of their thesis, assignments, homework tasks, essays or presentations (except under specific instructions from their advisor/lecturer).
  • Students are responsible for the contents of their own homework tasks, assignments, essays and their thesis.
  • Students should acknowledge any use of AI clearly and state how AI was used (e.g. I used AI for creating the graphs and tables in my assignment.) Students should also give the prompt and the name of the programme used. If AI is used to generate texts, students must be able to show the differences between the generated text and their revised version.
  • AI and word processing programmes may only be used for basic grammar checking; they cannot be used for making changes regarding the style or coherence of a text.
  • If a student is suspected of having used AI for writing an assignment or any task for which it is not permitted, the lecturer has the right to ask the student to prove their knowledge in an oral exam, to show how they created the assignment (e.g. their drafts and notes) or to rewrite the assignment. The decision will be made by using comparisons between the assignment and the student’s previous work or performance during classes. The lecturer is also permitted to use AI detection programmes.
  • In the case of graduating students, both the advisor and the opponent can ask the student to prove that they did not use AI to generate their thesis or any part of it.
  • The general rule is that AI may only be used as described above and should not replace the learning or research process completely.
