University Attendance Policy

HALLGATÓI KÖVETELMÉNYRENDSZER

Policy Statement:

This policy outlines the guidelines for student attendance in seminars and double lessons during the semester at the University of Miskolc. Regular attendance is crucial for academic success, class participation, and fostering a conducive learning environment. This policy aims to strike a balance between flexibility and accountability while ensuring that excessive absences do not hinder the learning process.

Attendance Expectations:

Maximum Allowable Absences: The subject coordinator determines the acceptable level of absences. ( Up to 3 occasions for full-time students and 2 occasions for part-time students). For this number of absences, NO DOCUMENTATION is required.

If students need to miss more classes than this for a justifiable reason, they should (1) give prior notification to the instructors and agree on a make-up plan, (2) submit official certification of absence (e.g., medical certificate, certificate of attending special training or competition, etc.).

Signature can be denied if students miss more than 40% of lectures and 30% of seminars without acceptable certification of absence.

Late Arrivals: Arriving late to a seminar or double lesson without prior notice may be considered a partial absence. Students are encouraged to arrive on time to maximize their learning experience and contribute to the class discussion.

Procedure for Handling Absences:

Record Keeping: Instructors will keep a record of student attendance for each seminar or double lesson. This record will be updated regularly and will serve as the basis for enforcing the absence policy.

Communication: Instructors will inform students about the attendance policy at the beginning of each course and clarify any questions students may have regarding the policy.

Absence Notification: Students must provide timely notification of their absence to the course instructor via the communication channels specified by the instructor (e.g., email, learning management system).

Exceeding Absence Limit: When a student exceeds the maximum allowable absences for a course, the instructor will communicate with the student to inform them that they are no longer eligible for a signature for that course.

Appeals: Students who believe they have legitimate reasons for exceeding the absence limit may submit an appeal to the course instructor or the department. The appeal should include relevant documentation supporting the exceptional circumstances.

Documentation: Students must provide valid and verifiable documentation for absences that go beyond the allowable limit, especially when submitting appeals.

Consequences of Not Meeting Attendance Requirements:

Denial of Signature: If a student is absent for more than 40% of the lectures or 30% of the seminars, practical sessions, or laboratory classes without being able to provide valid justification, they may be permanently denied credit for the respective course, and the student can only make up for the absence by retaking the course.

Academic Performance: Excessive absences can affect a student's understanding of course content, their participation grade, and their overall academic performance.

Exceptions:

Exceptions to this policy may be made in cases of extenuating circumstances, such as medical emergencies or official university events. In such cases, students are required to provide appropriate documentation.

Effective Date:

This policy is effective from the beginning of the 2023/1. semester and applies to that semester.

Review and Amendments:

This policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. Any necessary amendments will be made based on the outcomes of these reviews.

The University of Miskolc is committed to fostering a productive and inclusive learning environment, and adherence to this attendance policy contributes to achieving that goal.
