Visit to Critical Canadian Studies Summer School, Toronto

Assistant lecturer, Attila Takács, of the Department of English Linguistics and Literature, University of Miskolc, participated in the 2025 Critical Canadian Studies Summer School held between the 23rd to 27th June at the Glendon Campus of York University in Toronto, Canada. This Summer School brought together PhD students from several countries including Canada, Poland, Tunisia, India, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

The Summer School aimed to foster a critical, interdisciplinary, and collaborative study of Canada, addressing significant societal and academic developments such as the country's relationship with Indigenous Peoples, diversity management, and environmental justice.

Featuring a diverse schedule of lectures and discussions, the gathering included key sessions entitled "Studying Canada: Understanding Ourselves/others, sharing stories/interests", exploring the role of official and non-official languages in Canada, and a crucial discussion on "Conducting ethical scholarship with and about the Indigenous Peoples of Canada".

A notable highlight was the session on "The covenant chain Wampum Belt: Magna Carta of Indigenous Peoples' rights." presented by Prof. Alan Corbière. Participants also delved into topics such as populism in Canada, engaging with Canadian photographic archives and community-driven research. Notable lecturers included Prof. Benjamin Moffitt, who gave a public talk, and Prof. Lianne C. Leddy, who delivered the Robarts Keynote.

This international gathering provided a valuable opportunity to engage with current scholarship in Canadian Studies and connect with a global network of emerging scholars in the field. We extend our sincere thanks to the organizers for a truly enriching program.
